I got my hair did!

And I LOVE it. I hadn’t had a haircut since last November and it was looking mangy, plus my bangs had grown out so far that the sun’s reflection off my massive forehead was blinding pilots flying overhead (overhead, haha, get it?) and causing plane crashes. I took myself to Salon Bleu yesterday, the foo-foo French place in town, located on the corner of Calle 20 and Avenida 10. The few times a year I get my hair cut, I always go there. First I was with French Audre, who left me and fled back to Paris. Then I was with Mexican Wendy, who also left me to go have a baby. I finally figured my best bet is to go with the French owner, Lionel, since it’s unlikely the owner will leave his salon, right? It’s always been harder to get an appointment with him, but after yesterday, I’m CURSING myself for not getting my hair cut by him from the start.

Why? The dude, he just GETS me.

All I did was show him about 4 photos of different types of styles I liked, and let him know I needed bangs, then just let him go to town. I am not a girl who is married to her hair and I LOVE to let the stylist work with what I’ve got and boy did he hit a homerun with this one. I was just planning on coloring it dark brown, but he stared at my head and with a dreamy look in his eye said, “I haz a vizshun for your hair” and put violet streaks in it. It was worth every freaking hard-earned peso.

These pictures were taken this morning, after going to the gym and sleeping on it. Messy and just my thing. I feel like such a girl again, so happy and healthy and with cute hair. Who the fuck am I?

From time to time in my jaunts across the vast expanse of the internets I come across a hairstyle that I think is cute. I save these hairdo photos in a special folder on my computer and rifle through them occasionally when I’m feeling ugly and bitchy because I rarely get to have my hair “did” anymore (in my old life, I was a salon junkie).

Well, my hair is overgrown and disgusting right now, so I’m dreaming of things I could do with it if I could find the right stylist, the appropriate amount of money, and the willingness to do more maintenance than throwing my gross locks up in a hair clip every day because it’s so freaking hot and who even looks at my old ass anymore, anyway.

Love the hairstyle of the girl on the left, with the color of the girl on the right. I cannot imagine all that hair touching me during the summer months here, however, so that’s out.

I love this style, but my hair is not nearly long enough, nor is it likely to ever be. I mainly like the bangs and the color.

I’m not about to blow dry and flat iron my hair, so this is posted only for the color.

OMG this one is so frickin’ cute. She’s just adorable, I want to be her. What do you think, could I do this?

LOVE the cut and color…but that blonde blonde blonde would be way too much work to maintain.

Dunno why I think this is so cute, it kind of reminds me of the bad 80s rockers. But in a good way.

I love her cute little bangs, but I only dream of having that much curl/body in my hair. She’s all pin-uppy and I love it.

Did anyone notice that every single one of the styles I like has bangs? The observant person will realize that this is because I have one of the largest foreheads ever measured on this planet. The observant person who also knows my history will know it’s because I still haven’t forgotten when Tim Paxton yelled out “Hey Forehead!” to me when I was in the 7^th grade and in the middle of a basketball game. It so jarred me that I stepped out of bounds and lost the Westfield Cyclones their possession of the ball. And I have worn bangs ever since.

Hair today

From the time I was in my early to mid 20s, I messed with my hair a lot. Within my family, at least, it became something of a trademark. Since I worked as a bartender for most of those young years, my hair color or cut didn’t matter, so I’ve been just about every color: red, brown, platinum blonde, pink, orange, purple, blue. I loved every single one of those colors in their own way.

I think part of my hair restlessness stems from the same urge that drives me to move away, to try new countries, to explore new jobs, to wish for the grass that is always greener. In short, I bore myself.

Living here has meant a level of poverty I haven’t experienced since I was a jobless kid and lived at home, so my hair mania has, by necessity, fallen by the wayside. In December of 2006 and April of 2007, my cousin cut and colored my hair when I went home to Chicago, at a steep discount (ie, free). These are the only 2 times in the last year that I’ve had anything done to my hair. As a result, my hair got longer than it’s been in 15 years. I loved that I could wear my hair in ponytails and braids, but lately it’s looked kinda, well, shitty.

Feeling sorry for myself today, lamenting my old wealthy life when I spent hours and hundreds of dollars in salons, I spent the ungodly sum of 310 pesos and got my hair cut at the foo-foo French place here in town, Salon Bleu (bluhhhhh).

While it’s not an outrageously bad cut, it is NOTHING like the picture I showed her. It’s about 6 inches shorter than I wanted to go and if I don’t style it a certain way, it’s definitely helmet-y looking. I have a feeling that in 5 months, I’ll like it, and hopefully by then I’ll be able to put it up again (because if it’s not long enough to put up by the hotter than balls summer, I’m doomed).

Although I’ve never been one of those girls attached to their hair, I mean c’mon, it’s just hair…when I saw the big ole pile on the salon floor today, I felt a little weepy. It took me FOREVER to get it long and just when it was, I lopped it off again (well, unintentionally, but still). Oh well. That’s what I get for having a Mexican girl cut my hair in a salon owned by a Frenchman in the Yucatan.

Help me pick my new color…I’m going to try to see if it makes me feel better about the cut.
