Although we’re still unsure of a name for Ol’ Blue (I’m leaning toward “Stella Blue”), I’ve already started dreaming of fabric for curtains. M. is cautioning me that we can’t afford to redo the interior yet and I know he’s right, but I can be ready for when the time comes, right?
Since our vehicle is such a headturner (seriously, on its journey from the shop to our home I watched every single person we passed do a double take), we thought it would be prudent for us to make side logo magnets for our business with contact info. Here are the colors in our logo (taken from the header of my website, not the exact logo of course):

Here are some of the fabrics that have caught my eye. I’ll post my three favorites first, but I’ve numbered them all so that you can mention in the comments which one you like the best. I take all of your suggestions seriously. Well, except yours, Jerry and Rob, since you’re so anti-hippie.

Ok, that is it so far. The Frida fabric is a bit too kitschy, but I do like kitschy and I thought it deserved a vote. My least favorite is number 10, I think. Can you tell I like the turquoise/orange color combo?

#5 and I would be willing to bet a paycheck Sarah would say #8.
So what about calling it the Blue Frijolero?

hey – i’d go for number 7. a lucky number plus just imagine what you’ll see with a few shots of tequila worming around your mind. and the dominant background of blue will complement the exterior the best.

#2 or #5 are my picks. What a great van. Have you heard from James since posting pics of his old van all pretty and shiny?

8 first, because it brings in the orange and the blue, and it’s bright…. 5 second, if you don’t care as much about the oranges…

hmmm, I can’t stand #5, could it be because I can remember the 1950′s? and they were horrid?
I actually love the Frida one, it’s like a Mexican version of a Hawaiian print.
Next best, #9 and then #4.
If you want sunbrella type fabric, check out http://www.outdoorfabrics.com good prices and you have mules to bring it down.

HOla.. I like, # 2, #3 and # 4 and of course # 6. My dad used to be a hippie when he married my mom, and when I was a kid I remember having a car like yours when it was orange.
You live in Tulum? Hablas espaƱol? where will you buy those fabrics? I find it so hard to get nice fabrics here.
Thanks for visiting my blog, my B-day was really fun, a great way to say goodbye to the twenties.

Bufante: I’m gonna say hell no on the frijolero thing, my brother.
Herb: I will consume no tequila in this van. Unless M. is driving, then maybe.
Semra: He hasn’t said much. I thought maybe he was feeling sad b/c it wasn’t his anymore, but I have heard from a very reliable source that he said it looked awesome.
Jonna: I like #5 along with a lot of others, but I really want to pull some orange in…so I’m leaning toward #4 now. But I still like 3 a lot. And Frida. Gosh, this is hard. I’m checking out that website, thanks for the link!
Jordy: Nope, I live in Playa. I guess you assumed Tulum because of all the joking hippie references, right? Jaja! I do speak Spanish, but only intermediately. I’m lazy. When I’m ready to buy the fabric, I will purchase it online and have it shipped to someone in the US who can bring it down for me. I don’t find great fabric here, either, except for fabric for AWESOME Halloween costumes!

The Frida is the most beautiful, but #7 the hippiest. Reminds me of Peter Maxx. I would worry about #10 forcing me to drive off the road.

#2 and #5 screams hippie. I love the Frida design but it does not really go with the theme.

Hi Heather,
first of all, i vote for number 7. squids plus beach equals kitsch but awesome.
second, i know we don’t know each other, but i found your site, am from chicago, and love mexico, and so have enjoyed reading about your negotiations of the playa and missing home. i respect what you’re doing and hope one day we will meet in real life. and until then, sigue dandolo like the real gringa chula that you are.
all respects,

3, 4 or 5 I am a little partial to sea horses….I think they can make themselves pregnant? Something crazy miraculous. So, when you (not YOU) tell some one to go F. yourself, really, your telling them they are a sea horse, which isn’t so offensive

TWO! TWO!! TWO!!!
I was at least alive and aware back then, so I know. It’s definitely the best and hippiest.
1, 8, & 10 – eliminate all the stripes because they are way too conservative and non-hippie.
3, 4 & 9 caught my eye because they bring in the beach location but they’re like your grandma’s attempt at hippie, so nix ‘em.
5 is pretty good, but you gotta have some orange in there in homage to its former life.
6 is too forced.
7 is pretty, but maybe a little too girly for Michael to be driving around?
So… TWO! TWO!! TWO!!!

I like #5, too, but for Stella, I’d go with both 1 and 2 and alternate the panels – maybe two in #1 and one in #2. If you want more orange, you could do the same with 3 and 4. What fun!

I have an authentic 70s peace sign I would like to gift to the van to adorn the rear view mirror…….if you can stand having stuff hang from the mirror…if you are interested, the next step would be to find a mule seeings as I have no trips in sight.
Oh, and I really like #2.
By: Bev on September 27, 2008

I vote for #1 because I used to have a sleeping bag from the 70′s that was a light turqoise on the outside and this print on the inside. It rocked and so does your van.

The van looks fabuloso and I love your fabric choices. I gotta say I love #8 the most because it takes in all the colours in your logo (which I also love) and stripes look very cool when seen through a window in small amounts.
But what I’d really like to suggest is picking two that go with each other, then use one as the liner. That way you get great fabric on both sides and can switch when you want to.
And if there’s any info on UV fading, take it into account.

I also obviously like the idea of using two patterns, as long as it’s not half and half – use one for accent. Number 8 would mix with Frida and look cool. I think that combo has possibilities, but would need to see them juxtaposed.
But for a – oooh, here comes an oxymoron – traditional hippie van, numbers 1 and 2 can’t be beat. Although I’ll amend my previous comment and suggest using only a little of #1, b/c it oh so subliminally suggests the US flag (which is SO right for this van), and use more of 2.
Such decisions – Can I be you?
Peace and love and shit.

Oh if only I could be Rachel Zoe so I could say that ” #2 has me, literally, gasping for air. #2 is, shutting it down, I am, dying for #2.”
hmmmm. it’s better with italics. XO!

I like #s 2, 4 and 7. I think you are very brave to ponder these fabrics. I’m such a chicken when it comes to patterns…that’s why you almost never see me in anything but solid t-shirts…chicken.

BEV, that would be so EXCELLENT to have the peace sign, especially since it comes from a real hippie from the 70s! My mom would definitely approve…I think I remember telling you before that you would probably get along with each other.

Ok, I am SOOO late here, but I can’t resist: NUMBER FIVE!!!!!!!
It’s got it all: the groovy pattern, the great blue & brown combo, a good match with Stella Blue’s colors… you can even save some fabric and make a head bandana to match!!!

I have found someone willing who is coming soon! I hope you see Maggie when she’s down or she will leave a package for you at Carboncitos on December 1st with Russell. I suggested she would be able to find you at PGs on a Friday night…..
