Ok, I’ve spoken a few times about the Mexican Postal Service, particularly about its notorious suckability. MexPat recently wrote a blog about receiving a letter, and I’ve seen a couple of comments from Fned in Paris that indicate the postal service in this country is improving.
I think it’s time I give them a another chance by putting their service to a clinical trial, but for this I will need your help. My idea is to ask you folks to mail me either a postcard or a letter, and I will report the results: how many arrive, when they arrive, etc.
I’m not going to just broadcast my address for the whole blinking world (this would really upset my Grandma Nancy), so please leave me a comment here if you’d like me to give you my address. If we don’t know each other (from Playa.info, the blogosphere, my family/friends, or whatever), don’t feel bad if I don’t give you my address. I will give half of the people my work address and half my home address, just to test their abilities to deliver to multiple addresses.
This should be interesting!

I’m in!

Indeed, this should be interesting. I generally receive my one letter a year, a Christmas card from my friend Erin, in April. Better late than never, yes?

We have actually done pretty well.
Don’t get a great deal of mail, but we do like to order from Powell’s books every couple of months.
We have always gotten our book but the time varies widely.
So, wanna Patzcuaro postcard?

Can I send you card?
June 23, 2008 at 10:58 am
Okay, I’ll do it–It’s been a long time since I was part of a control group… do you happen to know what postage is from here to there?
June 23, 2008 at 11:29 am
Michael Holmes and I were going to do something similar one Thanksgiving. I took photos of everyone, then we were going to print the photos and paste them on to postcards, have everyone put address on and then mail from Mexico. Well, we got the pictures taken then started having too much fun to do all that work!
So, love to help you out with this “test.”

I’ll be very curious to see the results of this experiment. We’ve had good luck and bad luck with the mail system here. Seems like the important stuff gets lost and the fluff gets here, what’s up with that? Anything important definitely comes Fedex now.
Patiently waiting…..for the next few months I am guessing.
Should we see how long it takes for a card to get from Cancun to Playa?

I have received, if I remember correctly, three pieces of mail since I moved here 4+ years ago. One friend didn’t believe me and, just to test things, sent me a note in an envelope marked “check enclosed!” Amazingly enough, it arrived within a week, totally unmarred, unopened, and entirely intact. I’m not sure what that proves, if anything. The second was a package of assorted Christmas goodies sent in late November, which arrived in late January. Some cookies were missing, but the rest was in the box. The peanut brittle was a little… distorted… however. The third was something I signed up online for, that I wasn’t interested in receiving their kaka at my “official” US address (Mom’s), so I gave them this one. Couldn’t believe it when an envelope from them showed up on my outside counter. (All mail for Paamul goes to a PO box in town and whoever picks up what little shows up there every couple weeks, distributes it to the rest of us.) I haven’t received anything else in the past 3 or so years, but I’m not aware of anyone sending me anything either.
I’m anxious to see the results of the experiment!

If you want me to send a postcard from Germany and do not mind that it probably will take several months, shoot me an email.

On the other hand a MX blogger got a letter from Krautland in 7 (!) days - a miracle. Look -> http://www.2009e.de/mexiko/ein-wunder-die-post-ist-da/

Sent myself a postcard from Playa once. Took about 2 months to get to Houston. I had actually forgotten about it. Will send from H-Town, to assist in your test…

My offer is still valid!
July 15, 2008 at 12:49 am
Done. Postcard on the way from Krautland to MX since 45 minutes.
